Tressel: Buckeyes ‘Beanie’-Less Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ohio The man they call Beanie will be "Benchie" Saturday… But maybe not much longer.

Head coach Jim Tressel announced on Thursday that running back Chris "Beanie" Wells will not play for Ohio State on Saturday vs. Ohio University.

Wells had injured his right toe during the third quarter of the Buckeyes’ season opener against Youngstown State.

"Beanie won’t go, feel good about his progress but he couldn’t practice this week — a risk when you can’t practice," Tressel said.

Senior Maurice Wells will likely start in Beanie’s place, but Brandon Saine and Daniel Herron will also see significant carries.

Other notes from the coach:
-Safety Kurt Coleman will return to the lineup Saturday after suffering an ankle injury.
-Tressel confimred that defensive back James Scott has left the program.

Earlier this week, Tressel said X-rays were negative, but Wells’ status remained unknown.

When asked if he would expect Wells to play next week against USC, Tressel said, "Yes."

He would not give Wells’ injury a specific name and said it was not significant or debilitating. His mother, Paulette, said Saturday her son was suffering from turf toe.
