Ohio State Smart to Give Kerry Coombs the Special Teams Coordinator Spot

One of the easiest aspects of putting together a collegiate coaching staff is finding a special teams coordinator. Seriously, it’s easy. Look around your staff. Find the most intense guy on it. Congratulations, that’s your special teams coordinator. He’ll be the one motivating guys to go running full-speed into contact coming full-speed the other way, or plowing straight into a line in the dim hopes of swatting a kick, or hurling into the impact point of a punt. Special teams is no place for the meek.
Ohio State has such a coach, and that’s cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs. And sure enough, let’s tack on “special teams coordinator” to his job title, because that’s exactly what Ohio State announced over the past weekend.
