Devin Gardner will wear Oregon State jersey in Michigan spring game to avoid wearing red (Dr. Saturday)

Rivalries are more fun the deeper they go. And when Michigan would rather ask Oregon State to use jerseys for the spring game rather than have their quarterbacks wear red, because that is the color of Ohio State, that’s exactly what we’re talking about.

Michigan quarterbacks are wearing no-contact jerseys in the spring. That was necessary after backup Russell Bellomy tore his ACL. The last thing the Wolverines need is for Devin Gardner to get hurt.

In most practices in football, red is the universal jersey color for no-contact. But those are Buckeyes colors. Michigan needed some no-contact color, so it sought out an orange jersey from Oregon State, as MLive.com and Inside Unis said.

Inside Unis was the first to report that the jersey for the spring game came from Oregon State. That blog noticed the similarity between the jersey posted on the Facebook page that is seen at the top of the post, which is also the one Gardner has been seen wearing in practice, to the Oregon State uniforms. And the OSU equipment manager told Inside Unis that it was from the Beavers:

  1. as a professional writer for one of the larger sports sites on the web, one would think you would actually know what you’re talking about. so allow me to straighten you out. The Ohio State Universiy’s colors have never been red and gray. Our school colors are scarlet and gray. Scarlet not red. if you’re going to write about such a legendary and storied rivalry, at least have the respect to get your facts straight.

  2. Hi Jason, thanks for commenting. The comments above were taken from the Michigan perspective and how the red they had chose was similar to the Scarlet of Ohio State. Hopefully this clears up any confusion.
