Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde has escaped any charges stemming from an incident at a Columbus club earlier this month. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the alleged female victim decided not to file charges and now the case is officially closed.
Originally, reports in the wake of the rumored assault had Hyde being kicked off the team, but the program later clarified that the senior starter had been indefinitely suspended. Video of the incident has also been released should you have the interest, but it’s difficult to really see what happened (skip to the 3:15 mark).
Despite charges not being filed, Hyde is still getting punished by the Buckeyes’ football program. The university released the following statement from head coach Urban Meyer:
“Carlos Hyde will be suspended for at least the first three games of the 2013 season for conduct not representative of this football program or this university. He will be required to fulfill additional obligations before he is allowed to play in a game.”
The Buckeyes have depth at tailback, but Hyde is by far their most experienced option, coming off a season where he rushed for 970 yards and 16 touchdowns. Ohio State’s first three games are against Buffalo, San Diego State and California.
It’s a strong move by Meyer, who has been plagued all summer by comments that he was a lax disciplinarian as head coach at Florida, where over 30 players were arrested during his tenure.
