Ohio State football team squeaks by Penn State with plenty of help from officials

Penn State rushed for just 16 yards and spent much of Saturday night trying to get its offense on track. Despite the Nittany Lions’ offensive struggles, they nearly pulled the upset against No. 13 Ohio State and fell just short in double overtime at Beaver Stadium. Penn State, which trailed 17-0 at halftime, certainly didn’t get any help from the officials in the game. The referees and replay officials made several mistakes and questionable calls throughout the game, with most of them benefiting the Buckeyes. It started with the first drive of the game as Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg was supposedly intercepted by Ohio State’s Vonn Bell. Replay clearly showed the ball hit the ground and the play should have been overturned but due to “technical difficulties” with the review booth’s feed the call somehow stood. The Big Ten said this as part of a statement about the call on Sunday, according to cbssports.com: “Due to these technical difficulties, only one isolated shot from the overhead camera was available and the view did not provide sufficient information to reverse the call. As a result, the play stood as called. The production truck rectified the technical issues shortly thereafter, and the replay booth had access to multiple feeds for the remainder of the game.” The Buckeyes took advantage of the blown call, driving 39 yards on seven plays to take an early 7-0 lead. …
