Fort Wayne Football Standout Dismissed From Ohio State Team

October 28, 2014 Updated Oct 28, 2014 at 2:12 PM EDT COLUMBUS, Ohio (21Alive) – The Ohio State football team has dismissed running back Rod Smith. Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer confirmed Smith’s departure in a statement provided by the university on Tuesday. “Rod Smith has left the Ohio State football team in order to deal with some personal issues. We will continue to support Rod and we wish him the best,” Meyer said. It is unclear what “personal issue” may have cost Smith his roster spot, but The Columbus Dispatch reports Smith failed a trug test. Meyer tells 21Alive and NBC33 on Tuesday afternoon that Smith had issues throughout his time at Ohio State, and that Smith’s dismissal is “disappointing,” but also an opportunity for someone else on the Buckeyes football team. Smith, a fifth-year senior from Fort Wayne, played high school football at Harding High School. Smith has rushed for 101 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. He rushed for 549 yards and 8 touchdowns in his Ohio State career. Smith holds the Summit Athletic Conference record for career rushing yards (6,625). He is the older brother of Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith. Smith will remain on scholarship, Meyer says, with plans to graduate this summer.
