Purdue basketball survives late Ohio State rally, topples No. 20 Buckeyes

On Wednesday night, Purdue found a way to beat its third ranked team in a row in Mackey Arena – a feat not accomplished since 1979. Purdue beat No. 20 Ohio State (17-6, 6-4), 60-58, to move into a two-way tie for second place in the Big Ten. The Boilers have defeated Iowa, Indiana and now Ohio State, which were all ranked at the time. In recent years, Purdue has not played well against the Buckeyes, either. Ohio State stepped onto Keady court with a six-game win streak against Purdue, including two of those wins in West Lafayette. But the win was not sealed – due to Purdue’s inefficiency the the free throw line – until Ohio State star freshman D’Angelo Russell missed a desperation 3-point shot at the buzzer missed the mark. Moments after tip-off, Mackey was buzzing as A.J. Hammons easily secured the jump ball. Purdue opened up the game with a nice play leading to an early foul on an Ohio State guard. Rapheal Davis, hitting 2-2 at the line, gave his team the lead early on. After quite a few back-and-forth moments from Purdue and Ohio State, both teams looked ready to start their run toward the end of the half.
