Ohio State officially lands Hylton OL Matt Burrell Jr. on National Signing Day

And in that realm as well as our own — where he coaches the national champion Ohio State Buckeyes football team — his least favorite verb tense this time of year is the conditional. Yet, as the morning of Feb. 4 — National Signing Day — approached, that’s exactly the construction one of his top recruits trafficked in. “I did think of the ‘what-ifs,’” Hylton offensive lineman Matt Burrell Jr. said. “What if I chose LSU, what if Florida State? I saw all the good things happening around the country, and I was seeing how I’d fit in. I talked to a few coaches with regard to switching, but not really.” But while Burrell did chat with LSU’s coaching staff and a couple other schools Wednesday morning before faxing his national letter-of-intent, the calls served mostly to thank the recruiters with whom he’d worked the past few years. After tying up loose ends, Burrell prayed, fluffed his pink neck tie and phoned Meyer around 7:30 a.m. to inform the coach his signing was never in doubt.
