Oregon-Ohio State national title game could be a shootout for the ages

(RNN) – After 21 weeks of a memorable college football season, it all comes down to this, the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The contestants: two teams that would not have had a chance of playing for the national title under the previous Bowl Championship Series system. Ohio State knocked off No.1 Alabama, and Oregon demolished defending national champion Florida State. The game, played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, will air at 8:30 p.m. ET, Monday, Jan. 12 on ESPN. The two teams run similar, high-octane offenses that score like mad. OSU’s Urban Meyer was among the first to master the now-ubiquitous spread option, building Utah into a national contender before moving on to Florida, where he won two national championships in 2006 and 2008. Oregon built their reputation on a blazing fast offense that was as flashy as their dozens of outrageous uniform combinations. The Ducks are searching for their first national championship after years of knocking at the door. Ohio State has won seven national titles, the most recent in 2002. Both defenses give up yards and points, but manage to set the pace, generate turnovers and force opponents into shootouts, which both are built to win. …
