NFL draft: Devin Smith is first Ohio State player selected, in second round by New York Jets

Devin Smith is a New York Jet.

The Ohio State receiver had to go standby in Chicago after being passed over in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft tonight, but he only had to wait five picks into the second round tonight to hear his name called. The 37th pick overall, he was the first Ohio State player taken in this year’s draft.

“This is everything,” Smith said on the NFL Network after he had been introduced on the stage in Chicago. “It’s everything to me, everything to my family and to everybody back in my community of Akron, Ohio, and Massillon, Ohio.

“So I am very, very happy.”

Smith was the seventh wide receiver taken in the draft, which was about where he was slotted by several draft analysts. He was the first wide receiver taken in the second round, which along with the third were the two rounds conducted tonight.
