Big-12 Got It Right This Week

(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images) The Big 12 is going to have One True Champion next year on the gridiron. I know, you have heard that one before. Conference athletic directors and administrators went to of all places, Arizona, this week for meetings, where they would like to send a team next January for the national championship game in Glendale. The conference officially announced on Wednesday, a tiebreaker to eliminate co-champions. I will give you two guesses and the first one won’t count, on what will be deciding factor in a two-team deadlock. Yep, the good old head to head match-up. Last season Baylor and TCU both lost one game. TCU’s loss was to Baylor. By season’s end the College Football Playoff Committee liked the Horned Frogs a little bit better than the Bears and the conference’s refusal to name a true champion was believed to have hindered its chance to get A team in the four-team playoff. Ohio State took advantage of the confusion racking up some series style points in the Big Ten Championship game, destroying a decent Wisconsin team 59-0 in Indianapolis. The same Badger squad would defeat Auburn in a bowl game, but was no match for the Bucks and their THIRD string quarterback Cardale Jones. The Buckeyes jumped over the Horned Frogs and distanced themselves from the Bears to grab the fourth and final playoff spot. Ohio State promptly upset Alabama in the semi-finals and disposed of Oregon in the national championship game. The question lingered for months whether the conference would respond, react or overreact. Of course the Big 12 is the only Big-5 power conference without a championship game and last week conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby hinted at the league moving towards such a game to possibly improve the chances of putting a team in the playoff. …
