Michigan State Football: Is Connor Cook really number two pick material?

Connor Cook Connor Cook vying for a spot next to Johnny Manziel? Late last week Todd McShay of ESPN released his way “too early” picks for the 2016 NFL Draft. At number two Connor Cook’s name was written next to the Cleveland Browns. McShay said he thought with the Browns struggling quarterback issues along with Cook’s past two seasons he could be the right fit. Cook, who is 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, is heading into his final season with the Spartans under coach Mark Dantonio. He is coming off an 11-2 season and a memorable Cotton Bowl Classic comeback victory. Cook led the Big Ten in passing last season with 3,214 yards. He was also a Maxwell Award semifinalist for college football Player of the Year and a Davey O’Brien National Quarterback semifinalist last season. The Spartans’ only two losses in 2014 came at the hands of eventual-National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes and eventual runner-up the Oregon Ducks, with both scheduled for rematches this season. This year the Ducks may be easier opponents as they’re without Heisman winner and this year’s number two overall pick Marcus Mariota. Mariota also won the Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. However, the Buckeyes could be more powerful than ever with their choice of three all-star quarterbacks in J.T. Barrett, Cardale Jones, and Braxton Miller. While Cook has proven he’s a good quarterback he’s not quite worthy of a number two pick just yet. Cook’s pass completion percentage was just 58 percent last season and only 50 percent in the Cotton Bowl Classic. By comparison Mariota’s was 68 percent last season…
