Cardale Jones says he hasn’t proven anything yet

Remember when Cardale Jones stepped in for Ohio State’s appearance in the Big Ten championship game against Wisconsin, replacing J.T. Barrett (who replaced Braxton Miller)? He completed 12 of his 17 pass attempts for 257 yards and three touchdowns. In the Sugar Bowl and College Football Playoff semi-final against SEC champion Jones threw for 243 yards and a touchdown, and added another 43 rushing yards for good measure. In the championship game against Pac-12 champion Oregon, Jones completed 16 of 23 attempts for 242 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for another score and 38 yards. Some NFL folks were suggesting he turn pro while his stock was as high as it was despite starting just three games. Jones felt he was not ready to jump in the NFL waters and instead suggested he still had much to learn at Ohio State. That theme has continued this summer. In an interview with ESPN.com, Jones says he has not proven anything yet and he views himself as third on the Ohio State depth chart behind Miller and Barrett. “I haven’t proven anything yet,” Jones said. “I haven’t proven anything to myself, my teammates, my coaches to label myself as a starter. That’s my opinion, my personal opinion.” “I’m kind of harder on myself than the coaches, but I was thrown into that position. I didn’t beat out J.T. [Barrett] going into the Michigan game. I didn’t beat out Braxton [Miller]. Unfortunately both guys got hurt, and luckily enough I was prepared to try to take advantage of the situation.” It’s a good thing Jones was ready to step in and take over the offense. Sure, Ezekiel Elliott was still ready to bust out and become a household name, which may have been enough for Ohio State to make a postseason run as the fourth seed in the College Football Playoff, but the Buckeyes still needed a quarterback capable of making some deep throws and converting some key downs…
