Former Buckeyes work with youth at football camp

The latest came on Saturday, as Luke was among several former Division I football players to instruct a youth camp for 60 boys in third through 12th grades at Kiwanis Jaycees Park in Malta. Luke was joined by fellow Ohio State alums, Dionte Allen, Jimmie Bell, Chris Carter and Dimitrios Makridis, and former Michigan Wolverine Shawn Crable as they worked with the youth on a variety of skills, including footwork, tackling and ball catching. “It’s a blessing to give back,” said Luke, who attended Ohio State from 2000-03 and was a wide receiver on the 2002 National Championship squad. “We take what we learned in our past and pass it along to these kids to propel them into their future.” Andy Drabik, who started this camp last year, knows several of the former college athletes. He appreciated them giving up their time to teach the next generation of football players. “It’s great for these kids to learn from guys who played Division I football and even saw time in the NFL,” he said. “Every kid dreams of playing for an Ohio State, but no one taught them how to get there. Our goal is to teach them the fundamentals and show them what it takes to play in college.” The morning sessions focused on the younger players as they ran through cones and learned proper tackling techniques. Clayton Bates, a 12-year-old from Cambridge, came to the camp in an effort to improve his skills. “It’s awesome to work with them. We’ve learned a lot about tackling and agility,” he said. …
