USA Today’s special edition on College Football is one of many previews to anoint Ohio State as No.1. The consensus preseason favorite has rarely lived up to that billing. It seems like it’s been raining 40 days and 40 nights — I’ve traded in my Camry for an ark — so why shouldn’t it rain on my parade, too? The arrival on newsstands this week of USA Today’s college football preview special edition was cause for personal celebration since I had the honor of writing the cover story on Ohio State as well as a full-page analysis of the defending national champion Buckeyes. But then a piece in the Columbus Dispatch by sports columnist Bob Hunter had to go and ruin it. I like Bob, and have known him for years. He’s a true professional. His column was a case of bad timing, not bad blood. It was nothing personal, but he suggested you put little stock in what you read in this USA Today edition and like publications sharing space in stores with Cosmopolitan, People and, yes, there’s still a Mad Magazine. Apparently, what I’ve written is not promoting the Buckeyes as much as it is torpedoing their chances as the consensus preseason No. 1 to repeat as national champions. …
