Fundraiser for Tyson Gentry foundation coming to Sandusky

Perkins graduate and former Ohio State football player was paralyzed in 2006; will host breakfast with former OSU players and a 5K Labor Day weekend in Sandusky When Tyson Gentry decided to hold a fundraiser to help launch his New Perspective Foundation, there was only one place for the Perkins graduate to turn to — home. “My hometown is a big part of who I am, and they did a fundraiser for me after I broke my neck and were a very big part of my support system early on after my injury,” Gentry said from his Florida home. “Obviously I know a lot of people there. “We’re still creating a network down here in Florida, but I just don’t think we’re ready to have a fundraiser down here yet,” he added. “We just don’t know enough people to make it happen and Sandusky just seemed like the right place.” On Sept. 4-5, Gentry will launch the New Perspective Foundation’s community outreach weekend, which will include a 5K, breakfast and an alumni basketball game with former Ohio State teammates and a chicken dinner. The events will be spread out over two days at the Sandusky Yacht Club, Battery Park, Daly’s Pub and Perkins elementary, middle school and high school. Gentry’s story is well known throughout the Buckeye state. He walked on to the Ohio State football team as a punter/wide receiver his freshman year in 2004. He was moved to primarily receiver in his sophomore year, and during an intrasquad scrimmage on April 14, 2006, he caught a pass over the middle of the field and hit the ground awkwardly as he was tackled. Gentry was paralyzed instantly from the neck down, and his life along with his family’s changed forever. One of the things that stuck out to Gentry during his post-surgery recovery was people from across the country sending him cards and letters of encouragement. …
