Updated AUG 11, 2015 at 7:22p ET On the first day of preseason camp, Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer laid out how he expects the Buckeyes to account for the loss of Joey Bosa, their All-America end who is suspended for the first game of the season for violating team rules. He only needed one word. “Hubbard,” Meyer said. While the general college football fan might not know who that is, any Ohio State fan who pays close attention to recruiting does. Sam Hubbard was the highest-rated player in Ohio and the highest-rated player Ohio State signed in the class of 2014, a five-star linebacker from traditional powerhouse Cincinnati Moeller. Hubbard bounced around positions last year, but now the 6-foot-5, 265-pound redshirt freshman appears to be settled in at defensive end. The other side of the Ohio State line will also have a different starter than it did at the end of last season, and Tyquan Lewis no doubt expects to be there beyond week one after Bosa becomes eligible to return. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Lewis played in 13 games last season as a redshirt freshman and logged nine tackles, including 2.5 for loss. Pushing those two will be sophomore Jaylin Holmes and redshirt freshman Darius Slade. Meyer also threw out the tantalizing prospect of senior linebacker Joshua Perry, the team’s leading tackler last season, shifting down to end at times. “Tyquan pretty much secured the one spot,” Meyer said. “You’ve got Hubbard and Jayln Holmes and Darius Slade. You’ve got other potentials, you’ve got a big kid named Joshua Perry who can do stuff for us if we decide to change up the defense.
