Tim Beck overseeing Ohio State’s ‘heavyweight’ battle

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Tim Beck’s previous job requirements included serving as the most second-guessed man in the state of Nebraska, dealing with the spotlight of a rabid fan base and managing the drama surrounding Taylor Martinez. Compared to his current detail, it looks like a cushy gig.

Beck more than landed on his feet when Bo Pelini and his staff were let go by Nebraska last winter, as he caught on as the quarterbacks coach for Urban Meyer and Ohio State. Of course, that also meant he suddenly found himself in the middle of the biggest position battle in the country and, maybe, in college football history.

Beck’s quarterback room became a little less crowded when Braxton Miller decided to switch to receiver this summer. But Beck is overseeing the intense competition between Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett, either one of whom would be starting for just about any school in America.

“It’s a blessing,” Beck said of coaching both. “But it’s also a curse.”

It’s a blessing because whomever wins the job is an immediate Heisman Trophy contender. It’s a curse because only one of them can play.
