1. Adam Rittenberg pointed out in his enlightening piece Tuesday about USC’s return from NCAA scholarship reductions that it has been seven years (!) since USC won the Pac-10/12. Turns out 2008 may have been a watershed: That’s also the last season that Penn State won the Big Ten and Florida won the SEC. You’ll have to go back longer to find the last conference title of storied programs such as Georgia (2005) and Michigan (2004), Nebraska (1999) and Tennessee (1998). My favorite geek stat doesn’t bode well for Alabama. No SEC champion has repeated in the BCS/playoff era that started in 1998.
2. Good for J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones. They don’t want to share the job. That’s what Ohio State fans should want them to say. But both players, as competitive as they are, have to understand that sharing the job may be the best answer. It may be hard to find a rhythm. But Bear Bryant, Bobby Bowden, Steve Spurrier and, yes, Urban Meyer all had successful seasons playing two quarterbacks. If Meyer decides he can befuddle defenses by alternating Barrett and Jones, they’ll learn to like it.
