Tech bracing for formidable foe in No. 1 Buckeyes

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer opened his Monday press conference by rattling off a list of some of the biggest names his Hokies have defeated in his 29 seasons at the helm.

“But the one thing that we’ve never had is beating a No. 1 team in the country,” Beamer said. “And we’ve had our chances.”

They get another on Labor Day night, on national television, when they host defending national champion Ohio State.

Last season, Tech handed the Buckeyes’ their only loss of the year, a 35-21 road win in Columbus.

Now, in the wake of the tragic WDBJ shootings in Roanoke and the national media attention brought on by Tech’s ill-fated fine system for football players, with ESPN sending part of its College GameDay crew to Blacksburg and country music star Brad Paisley holding a free concert this Sunday, the Hokies are going to work preparing for perhaps the most formidable opponent they’ll have ever faced.
