Ohio State starts Cardale Jones at quarterback against Virginia Tech

After months of speculation and reports, we finally got our answer. Cardale Jones was the quarterback that took the field on Ohio State’s opening offensive possession, not J.T. Barrett. Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer held out on publicly naming the starter prior to the game and we had to wait one possession as Ohio State won the coin toss, but deferred to the second half. Jones led the Buckeyes to three straight wins in the Big Ten title game, the College Football Playoff semifinal and the CFP title game — his only three starts last season. Despite leading Ohio State to a national championship, Monday night was Jones’ first career regular-season start as he did not take over until the middle of the Michigan game in 2014 after Barrett went down with an injury. Despite not getting the starting nod, Barrett is one of the captains for Ohio State and is the first sophomore in school history to receive that honor. Meyer said prior to the game that there was still a possibility that both quarterbacks would play. Cardale Jones gets the nod as Ohio State’s starting QB in the opener. (USATSI)
