The biggest off-season question in college football was finally answered last night: Cardale Jones started at quarterback for the defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes. As it turns out, Jones found out the answer at the same time the rest of the country did. “Both of us had our helmets on,” Jones said before the Buckeyes’ first series of the season, referring to him and J.T. Barrett. “And both of us had our mouthpieces in looking at each other.” And then, coach Urban Meyer told Jones to take the field. “When y’all found out, I found out,” Jones said. • STAPLES: Quarterback questions remain for Ohio State Meyer told reporters after the game that because Jones finished last season as the starter, he would have to be beaten out for the starting job. And although the competition was close, Barrett did not do enough to unseat the quarterback who led Ohio State to a national title. Meyer’s decision paid off, with Jones leading the Buckeyes to a 42–24 win against Virginia Tech. The redshirt junior completed nine of 18 passes for 186 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. He also ran for 99 yards and another score.
