Maybe the plan all along was to get J.T. Barrett involved early off the bench as a complement to starter Cardale Jones. This seems like a safe bet, given how often the Buckeyes have spoken of the importance of using both players and the value of having such a talented tandem. But Ohio State certainly appeared to be working off-script when at almost the exact moment Jones was tackled well short of the first-down marker to end a third scoreless drive in four tries in the first half on Saturday against Hawaii, Barrett was yanking off his headset and peeling behind the bench to start warming up his arm. Calling it a controversy may still be an overstatement, but the quarterback situation remains a work in progress, even after two games. “I still have to evaluate how we’re doing that and what’s the best opportunity to go down the field and score,” Meyer said. “This is — I can’t recall in major college football history when I remember witnessing something like that, where you have two good guys. I have to self-evaluate, too, and make sure we’re doing the right thing by those guys. “I’ll have more answers for you after I think it through and watch the film.
