College football focus: Ohio State may need to settle on a QB

Ohio State continues to hold onto its No. 1 ranking, but support diminished in the wake of the Buckeyes’ close call against Northern Illinois. After controlling the vote for a couple of weeks, the Buckeyes lost seven first-place votes to Michigan State, 11 to Mississippi and one to LSU. The problems with the offense were well documented after Saturday’s 20-13 win, and NCAA statistics reflect that issue even more. Ohio State is No. 75 in the country in total offense, No. 104 in passing offense and No. 102 in third-down conversions. Coach Urban Meyer might be starting to realize that he needs to settle on a quarterback after alternating for three games between Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett. He conceded that something more permanent might be in order, he just wasn’t sure of the answer in the wake of the home win. “There might be some truth to that,” he said after the game. …
