‘Rocky’ start to Ohio State football season

He once designed gameplans and coached quarterbacks at the school that gave Ohio State fits last Saturday. And like just about everyone else, Rocky Alt has an opinion about the Buckeyes’ festering quarterback quandary and what ails the offense.

“I think they’re a great football team, but even great teams have bad games,” the Crestline and Crawford County Hall of Famer said. “The important thing is to win the bad games because you’re going to play better and get better.”

There’s pretty much nowhere to go but up for the OSU offense after a turnover-marred performance in the 20-13 victory over Northern Illinois, where Alt was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 1995 to 2000.

Cardale Jones, who has started the last six games after a broken ankle sidelined 2014 finalist J.T. Barrett, threw two interceptions and was benched early in the second quarter. Barrett didn’t fare much better as a relief pitcher, offsetting the pass he threw to account for the only offensive TD with an interception and two other near-picks.
