Ohio State football: Sam Hubbard a success at defensive end

COLUMBUS — You will have to excuse Sam Hubbard if he felt a little lost for a while. In a matter of two years, Hubbard went from a high school football safety and an All-American lacrosse player at Cincinnati Moeller to an outside linebacker prospect at Ohio State who was given a look at tight end early in his freshman year. Hubbard has finally found a home, though. Weighing 50 pounds heavier, and exponentially stronger, than he was in high school, Hubbard is now an integral part of the Buckeyes as a defensive end. Advertisement The position carousel has stopped, this time for good. “Honestly I didn’t feel like I was a defensive end until I actually played at Virginia Tech,” Hubbard said. “I always wondered what an actual game would be like as a defensive end. After I saw the game reps, I felt I belonged where I was.” Hubbard, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound redshirt freshman, is in a rotation at defensive end with Tyquan Lewis and Joey Bosa. Through three games, he has eight tackles, three tackles for loss and 21/2 sacks — two more than All-American Bosa. Few saw this transformation from high school safety to college defensive end.
