No. 1 Ohio State outlasts Maryland, 49-28, in what could be Randy Edsall’s final game

Whether he was coaching his final game at Maryland on Saturday afternoon, Randy Edsall and the Terps turned in an inspired performance in pushing the nation’s top team on the road with a hostile sellout crowd in the stands. Maryland opened up its playbook and displayed a creativity not seen during its 2-3 start that featured three losses by at least 21 points. The defense tried to keep the Terps in the game. And Maryland benefited from a few Ohio State mistakes. But once again, Maryland fell short. No. 1 Ohio State pulled away in the second half for a 49-28 victory before a homecoming crowd of 107,869 at Ohio Stadium. If Saturday was indeed Edsall’s final game on the Maryland sideline — which many reports indicated it would be — his team played its best game of the season against a superior opponent. Maryland was relatively even with Ohio State through the first quarter. The Terps defense forced a three-and-out on the Buckeyes’ first possession and followed it up with a big play in the passing game they had been sorely missing.
