The Utes’ body of work earns this week’s top spot

I finally pulled the trigger. Ohio State has allowed too many inferior teams to stay close for more than 30 minutes – the latest being Maryland, whose ornery coach was fired Sunday – to hold onto the top spot, and nobody can match Utah’s resume. The Utes (or as Joe Pesci would say, “The Yoots”) move into the No. 1 spot after defeating another team that was either ranked at the time of the game or has shot up the rankings following its game with Utah. The latest is Cal, who entered Saturday at No. 23. Utah’s 30-24 victory probably was not seen by many on the East Coast, which is why a non-brand name team from the Pac-12 will not get the love, say, Michigan would get if it were in the same spot. Speaking of Michigan, that happens to be the other team Utah disposed of that enhances its resume.
