Scoping it Out: MacMaster leads band at The Ohio State University

As one gets older, in looking back, there’s always one or two things that would have been fun to witness first-hand over a newspaper career. Being afforded an opportunity to attend a Division I football game with the No. 1-ranked college football team serving as host was something this old scribe could only dream of. But, last weekend in Columbus, Ohio, we joined up with John MacMaster of Williston to check out the flavor of Big Ten football at its best. The game was slated for Saturday with the Buckeyes of The Ohio State University hosting the Maryland Terrapins, new to the Big Ten Conference. However, we learned early on, that while the game is important, that’s not the only thing taking place in Buckeye nation. Arriving Friday afternoon it was off to a practice session for the OSU Marching Band, a group that carries the tag as The Best Damn Band in the Land (TBDBITL). This was a name coined by the late Woody Hayes, a longtime feisty football coach at OSU. But you should also know, the band came even before football at OSU, dating back to 1878 as a military drum and fife corps performing music for cadet drills on campus. That should also give you a pretty good idea of what the direction the band still takes today.
