Penn State football looks to spoil Ohio State’s ‘Dark Night’

As Penn State awaits its primetime battle with Ohio State at Ohio Stadium, the Buckeyes are taking the showdown seriously. Ohio State will leave its classic scarlet and gray jerseys in the closet, and don a brand new all-black look. The fan base will also join the theme, and wear shirts that read “Dark Night at the Shoe.” The last time the Nittany Lions took the field at the Horseshoe, they suffered a significant defeat, losing 63-14 – the second largest deficit in school history. Two seasons later, Penn State will return with a different coaching staff. Since James Franklin became head coach at Penn State, the team has a 2-3 road record, not including games played at a neutral site. The blue and white have not played a road game against a ranked opponent yet under the Franklin regime. “I think going into these venues whether it’s experience in the NFL, whether it’s experience in college, I think it prepares you,” Franklin said about drawing on past games against highly ranked teams. When Franklin coached Vanderbilt before arriving at Happy Valley, he held a 1-8 record against ranked teams. The only win was a home victory against No. 15 Georgia in 2013.
