Examining Ohio State Football’s dual quarterback system

Before the season began, Ohio State Football was swarmed by national attention regarding their chaotic National Championship season. Whether it was Heisman-hopeful Ezekiel Elliott or the potential for back-to-back National Championships, it seemed as if the media had an infinite number of topics to focus on. Somehow, though, the whole country followed along as only a single question was asked and elaborated upon; who would be the starting quarterback? Urban Meyer made it clear from the very beginning that he was not revealing the starter until the first game and, when the time came, the country watched Cardale Jones get the nod for the Buckeyes over sophomore J.T. Barrett after Braxton Miller made a position change. But after seven undefeated games so far this season, the fan base, coaching staff, and even the players have to ask themselves; is Cardale Jones a better option than J.T. Barrett?

The Undeniable Truth

To be clear, let us point out the fact that other than his size, Cardale Jones is less productive than J.T. Barrett in every statistical facet in the game of football. Regardless of statistics, Barrett also brings countless non-statistical assets to the football field. He has confidence, leadership, and (most of all) he has experience running Urban Meyer’s system. He has accounted for five more touchdowns than Jones in the past two games despite playing significantly less time. Multiple times this season, Barrett has shown he is the more viable option in the backfield. So, might we all ask, why has he not received the nod?
