COLUMBUS, Ohio — J.T. Barrett is the Big Ten Conference co-offensive player of the week after his 324-total yard and five-touchdown effort in No. 1 Ohio State’s 49-7 victory over Rutgers Saturday in Piscataway, N.J. Barrett, in his first start of the season, shared player of the week honors with Michigan State senior quarterback Connor Cook, who threw for 398 yards and four scores in the Spartans’ win over Indiana. Barrett, who topped 300 yards of total offense for the eighth time in his career, did so with an effective mix of 223 passing yards off a 14-for-18 showing and 101 rushing yards off 13 carries. He put Rutgers on edge right away with a 39-yard rush on the Buckeyes’ second play from scrimmage. He also completed 10 passes of greater than 10 yards to five different players, including a 50-yard TD pass to Michael Thomas and a 30-yard TD completion to Curtis Samuel. Ohio State had 528 total offensive yards against the Scarlet Knights, the second-most in a game this year (572 vs. Virginia Tech). The player of the week award is Barrett’s 18th over the last two seasons. He was named a Big Ten or national player of the week 17 times in 2014, including a conference-record seven Big Ten freshman of the week honors and three offensive player of the week awards.
