Numbers don’t motivate Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott, but he’s aware

0 Shares print COLUMBUS, Ohio — Yardage might not be his primary focus, but Ezekiel Elliott has proven to be pretty aware of exactly where he stands and where he wants to go. Before the season, the Ohio State running back rattled off the school’s all-time rushing record and who holds it without batting an eye. During a game, sometimes his up-to-the-second total is unavoidable on the huge video boards at the Horseshoe. At other times he can just sense that he hasn’t crossed the 100-yard barrier that has become his trademark baseline of consistency. And while the Heisman Trophy candidate might not be motivated by individual statistics, he confessed that his knowledge of his numbers might have played a part in his push to stay on the field in the second half of a blowout at Rutgers last week. And with his place in history on the line, Elliott again capitalized on his chance to make it. “Sometimes you know,” Elliott said. “It’s not really like a priority of mine to see how many yards I have during the game. But that was just one where I knew I didn’t have 100, and it was something I just was trying to get before they pulled me. “Basically, it was me begging Coach [Urban] Meyer to let me go back in for another possession.” All Elliott actually needed was one more carry to extend the nation’s longest active streak of 100-yard games to 13, exploding on a 55-yard burst that helped him easily clear the bar, gave him yet another touchdown and then allowed him to comfortably take off the rest of the fourth quarter.
