Rutgers reportedly eyeing Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash

Could Rutgers stay in the Big Ten to fill its head coaching vacancy? That’s a possibility, according to a Fox Sports report. Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman reported Wednesday that Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash “is being looked at as a good option by Rutgers to be the Scarlet Knights’ next head coach,” according to an anonymous source. The Buckeyes are ranked second nationally in scoring defense this season. Syracuse was considered a strong suitor for Ash, but USA Today reported that the 41-year-old has withdrawn from the Orange’s coaching search. Syracuse is expected to hire Bowling Green coach Dino Babers, according to the USA Today report.  Rutgers has been searching for a head coach since firing Kyle Flood on Sunday. New athletic director Pat Hobbs, who was officially hired on Sunday, has been tight-lipped about Rutgers’ coaching search. A native of Iowa, Ash has no head coaching experience and no apparent ties to New Jersey. Prior to landing at Ohio State in 2014, Ash spent one season as the defensive coordinator at Arkansas and two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin. He has also been an assistant at Iowa State, San Diego State and Drake, where he played defensive back from 1992-96. …
