Women’s basketball: Ohio State loses tight one to Notre Dame

After opening the season with losses to No. 1 Connecticut and No. 2 South Carolina, 10th-ranked Ohio State had a shot at No. 3 Notre Dame. The Buckeyes couldn’t quite pull it off, though, as Kelsey Mitchell scored 27 points but couldn’t force overtime in the closing seconds as the Fighting Irish held on for a 75-72 victory on Wednesday night. Ohio State coach Kevin McGuff said he hopes his players learn from facing the top three ranked teams. “A lot of times it’s about handling success when you win. For us it’s about trying to learn from these games. It’s tough because I thought we played hard and competed. When you don’t win it’s tough,” he said. “We need to make sure we continue to take inventory of where we are and make sure we get better.” Madison Cable hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 56 seconds left then made a pair of free throws with 7 seconds remaining to clinch the victory for Notre Dame. Cable’s 25 points topped her previous career high of 22 points she had in a 92-84 overtime victory over UCLA against on Saturday. “I was kind of open and I knew that we needed to shoot it and at least try to get a rebound if it didn’t go in,” Cable said. “I had a decent look. Luckily it went in.” Cable was 5 of 9 from 3-point range and added 11 rebounds and three steals “She’s as good a shooter as there is in college basketball, and she played great tonight,” McGuff said. …
