Rutgers set to hire Ohio State DC Chris Ash as head coach

Ohio State’s head coach isn’t going anywhere, but one of its defensive coordinators reportedly is. Following up on reports connecting him to the job earlier this week, OSU co-coordinator Chris Ash is finalizing details to be Rutgers’ new head coach, SI.com‘s Thayer Evans is reporting.  FootballScoop.com subsequently confirmed the hiring. Ash would replace Kyle Flood, who was fired late last month after four seasons with the Scarlet Knights.  Al Golden and former RU head coach Greg Schiano had also been rumored candidates for the position. Of particular interest to the Scarlet Knights is Ash’s experience in the Big Ten, having spent two seasons at OSU as well as three seasons (2010-12) at Wisconsin.  In between those B1G stints, he spent one season as the coordinator at Arkansas. This season, the Buckeyes are second in the country in scoring defense, giving up an average of 14 points per game.  At 4.08 yards per run play, the defense overseen by Ash and Luke Fickell is 12th in the nation. In addition to his coordinator role, Ash also serves as the Buckeyes’ secondary coach. OSU is 12th nationally in passing yards allowed (176.2 per game), and is seventh in yards per pass attempt at 4.72. With today’s developments, including the long-expected hiring of Bowling Green’s Dino Babers by Syracuse, there will be six FBS head-coaching jobs available. …
