GWINNETT GRADS: Norcross’ Cooper, Ohio State enjoying basketball season

A college basketball career that wasn’t enjoyable at the start has flipped in a very positive way for former Norcross star Shayla Cooper. Cooper originally went to Georgetown, where she averaged 16 points and 8.5 rebounds in the only two games she played there. Caught in a rough season that included the resignation of the Hoyas’ head coach Keith Brown, after an investigation into unprofessional conduct and inappropriate language used toward his players, she dealt with an abbreviated freshman season and a search for a new home, which she found quickly at Ohio State. Now a junior, Cooper and the Buckeyes are enjoying a great season thus far. She is a key player for Ohio State, ranked fifth nationally at 12-3 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten Conference. “I like it a lot here,” Cooper said. “It hasn’t been snowing, so that’s good. It’s gone well and school-wise, I love it here. … So far, so good this season. I think we have a pretty good record and we had an awesome preseason and non-conference games. That set us up well to be able to compete in the conference. Every night’s going to be a big game. Every team in the Big Ten is great. I don’t think there’s a team where we have an easy one.
