Report: Meyer praises Saban, but won’t call him the best coach ever

After winning his fourth title in seven seasons — and his fifth championship of his coaching career, Alabama head coach Nick Saban is being discussed as one of the greatest coaches in college football history. Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, arguably his biggest rival during his coaching career, is impressed by Saban’s record but isn’t ready to proclaim him the best coach the college game has ever seen.  Meyer spoke to Gridiron Now to discuss the legacy Saban is currently making for himself and does place Saban among the best coaches ever in college football history: “I certainly think he’ll (Saban) go down as one of the greatest in the history of college football,” Meyer said. “I know everybody knows that. But I don’t want to say ‘the best’ — one of the top two or three.”“But to sit here and talk about the job he’s done is senseless. That’s the marquee program again.” The biggest compliment Meyer gave Saban was his consistency, not just in coaching but in all major areas of his program. Meyer should know, over a nine-year span from 2006-2014, his teams won three national titles and three conference titles — two with Florida and one with Ohio State.  Meyer also knows how difficult it is to beat a Saban coached team, as the two have split their four game head-to-head series over the years. Of course the last time the two met, Ohio State upset Alabama in the Sugar Bowl Playoff game on their way to a national title.  If Saban wins another national title before retiring, it would be hard for even Meyer to deny his place in history. Although if Meyer can beat Saban in their next showdown on his way to yet another title, which would also give him the head-to-head series advantage over Saban, the conversation may soon turn to Meyer’s place in the game’s all-time history book.
