Ohio State basketball can’t rest on moral victories

When the final buzzer went off after Ohio State’s 66-61 loss to Maryland, the Buckeyes were once again reeling from disappointment. While the team played with a valiant effort throughout, it wasn’t enough to overcome another loss against a high profile opponent. It was another reminder that Ohio State has room to grow before it can compete with the top-tier teams in the Big Ten. If nothing else, Ohio State put on a better showing than their first encounter with the Terrapins. The 100-65 thrashing on Jan. 16 tied the record for worst loss in program history. The Buckeyes responded well by keeping Maryland on its heels for most of the first half. A few stretches of poor offense down the stretch would prevent the Buckeyes from taking over. Thad Matta summed it up best after the game. “I’ve never been a big fan of moral victories,” coach Matta said. “…You’ve got to find some positives, but we had a chance to win the basketball game.” Young teams like Ohio State often deal with adversity over the course of a season. The struggle to find an offensive identity and consistency on both ends can be difficult. That’s been the story for these Buckeyes who’ve experienced peak highs with valley lows. From losses to UT-Arlington and Louisiana Tech, to defeating Kentucky during a seven-game win streak, to blowout losses on the road. …
