Donald Trump says Urban Meyer said ‘nice things’ about him

The first rule to holding a political rally in Columbus is to make some sort of reference to Ohio State football in the opening remarks. Donald Trump didn’t miss that memo Tuesday. Speaking to a crowd at Port Columbus International Airport, the Republican front-runner complimented Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer, calling Meyer “a great coach” and adding “he has said such nice things about me.” Via the Columbus Dispatch: For the record, Meyer hasn’t endorsed any specific candidate. In fact, if he did ever say anything nice about Trump, it wasn’t publicized. Meyer made that clear during a recent press conference. “My job description is very clear, and that’s to coach Ohio State football, and the focus is on 17 to 18 to 22-year-olds,” Meyer said, via the Dispatch. “I have strong beliefs but I’m not going to share that with you guys. I don’t think that’s appropriate.” The notion that Trump may have stretched the truth in this instance to appease Ohio voters is certainly plausible. Of the more-than 100 Trump statements checked out by fact-checking website Politifact, 79 of them have been categorized as “Mostly false,” “False” or “Pants on fire.” Meyer has visited the White House twice as a football coach, once during the George W. Bush administration and twice under Barack Obama. The Ohio State coach was complimentary of both presidents, according to USA Today. Ohio voters will head to the polls March 15.
