Ohio State Buckeyes Football COLUMBUS (WCMH) — James Herbstreit, a former Ohio State athlete and father of ESPN personality Kirk Herbstreit, has passed away according to his son. James Herbstreit played three years for the Buckeyes and was named captain of the 1960 Ohio State football team. He also played baseball for the Buckeyes. After he graduated, Kirk Herbstreit said he father was an assistant under former OSU head coach Woody Hayes. “Overwhelmed by the well wishes about my Dads passing,” Kirk Herbstreit said on Twitter Thursday evening. “I truly am.
