Ohio State’s AD apologizes to Michigan … not that he needed to

Some apologies just seem unnecessary … and this one qualifies. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to apologize for comments that riled up Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh. Smith’s original comments, per Cleveland.com, came Tuesday when he was asked if Ohio State would ever consider going to Florida for some of its spring football practices like Harbaugh did with the Wolverines. “Is it creative?,” Smith said. “Does it help from a recruiting and marketing point of view? I get that. If we were jumpstarting our program I’d probably try and do that, too. But we’re not jumpstarting our program. We’re in a different place.” None of that is particularly out of line. Michigan is a program that Harbaugh is trying — and seemingly has well on its way — to return to glory, while Ohio State won the national championship after the 2014 season, has won two straight Big Ten titles and is a whopping 50-4 in four seasons under Urban Meyer.
