Women’s NCAA Basketball Tourney Full of Upsets

Women’s NCAA Basketball Tourney Full of Upsets By Sheri Warren, Friday at 11:37 pm It started earlier tonight when Washington beat Kentucky at Rupp Arena on the Wildcats home court. The final score was 85-72 with the #7 seed beating the #3 seed and the Huskies are headed to the Elite 8 thanks to this impressive victory. In the game being played at the same time, a real shocker occurred when the Syracuse Orange knocked out the #1 seed South Carolina Gamecocks. The final score was 80-72 and Syracuse is headed to the Elite 8 for the first time in program history. The upsets continued in the late games as #1 seeded Notre Dame fell to the #4 seed Stanford Cardinal 90-84. This was a much closer game than the earlier ones and the outcome ended the Fighting Irish’s bid for a sixth straight Final Four appearance. In the other late game, my personal favorite team, the Tennessee Lady Vols battered the Ohio State Buckeyes in a relatively easy win with the final score of 78-62. Tennessee is ranked #7 and Ohio is ranked #3 making this another upset in the road to the Final Four. Tennessee’s Center Mercedes Russell was a BEAST tonight shooting a career-high 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the Lady Vols victory. Kentucky should have won on their home court; Notre Dame should have won against Stanford; Ohio State should have won against Tennessee; and, South Carolina really should have won against Syracuse – but they didn’t. Which just goes to show you how any team can win in these NCAA tournament games. It is true in the men’s tourney and it proved to be true tonight in the women’s tourney in a big way. Next up for Washington will be Stanford on Sunday pitting the #7 seed Huskies versus  #4 seed Cardinal. In what will prove to be a sea of orange in the stands on Sunday, #7 seed Tennessee will face #4 Syracuse. Bye Bye Fighting Irish, Gamecocks, Wildcats and Buckeyes – HELLO Huskies, Cardinal, Orange and Lady Vols. …
