Boys basketball: Plano West alum Mickey Mitchell transferring from Ohio State

According to CBS’ Jon Rothstein, Plano West alum Mickey Mitchell will transfer from Ohio State University. Mitchell recently completed his freshman season with the Buckeyes men’s basketball team, averaging 2.0 points and 2.8 rebounds on the year. Mitchell’s role with the team grew as the season progressed, with the West alum playing at least 14 minutes in each of Ohio State’s final eight games. During that span, he averaged 3.3 points and 4.8 rebounds in 21.5 minutes. This development marks the latest in a series of roller coaster events chronicling Mitchell’s hoops career at the high school and college level. Formerly ranked as a top-five prospect in the country early into his high school tenure, Mitchell transferred between West and Prestonwood Christian Academy twice — from Shepton High School to Prestonwood as a freshman and from Prestonwood to West prior to his junior year. Helping guide Prestonwood to a TAPPS 5A championship as a freshman in 2012, Mitchell played his final two years of high school hoops at West, which culminated in a Class 6A state title in 2015. His college commitment to Ohio State followed a back-and-forth trajectory, verbally committing to the university in August 2013, decommitting in August 2014 and recomitting in September 2014. Even the start of Mitchell’s freshman campaign with the Buckeyes was delayed by awaiting eligibility from the NCAA. As a result, Mitchell was sidelined for Ohio State’s first 10 games of the 2015-16 season.
