Ohio State’s Ezekiel Elliott living, training in South Florida

The Dolphins made it clear they’re interested in Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott when they brought him to Davie to visit training camp.But the connections don’t end there. Before elaborating, some words of caution: There’s a good chance Elliott will be long gone before the Dolphins draft with the 13th overall pick — provided they stay at No. 13. They could trade up to acquire Elliott, which ESPN analyst Mel Kiper said Tuesday they’re trying to do. But even then, it would go against conventional wisdom to draft a back that high, especially for a team such as the Dolphins, who have many glaring needs. Still, if Mike Tannenbaum, who runs the Dolphins’ football operations, and General Manager Chris Grier secure Elliott, a certain familiarity level already would be in place, even though Elliott went to high school in St. Louis before heading to Columbus, Ohio. Elliott already is in South Florida, working with highly respected trainer Pete Bommarito along with scores of other future and current pros. Elliott is renting a place here in the meantime, which perhaps explains his Twitter bio listing him as being from “STL/Columbus/Miami.” Elliott’s coach at John Burroughs High was Gus Frerotte, the Dolphins’ 2005 starting quarterback, although Frerotte played for six other NFL teams in his 15-year career. Finally, Grant Wallace, a scouting intern for the Dolphins, reportedly spent about 15 minutes chatting with Elliott at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Wallace, son of former Rams executive Bob Wallace, was a high school teammate of Elliott’s before becoming a standout receiver at Yale.
