Thompson, Many visit Ohio State

Two Sterlington High football coaches had a unique opportunity recently as they visited with the football and men’s basketball coaching staffs at The Ohio State University. Head coach/athletic director Jason Thompson and strength & conditioning coach Jeremy Many arrived in Columbus, Ohio on Thursday, April 7 and departed Sunday, April 10. Larry Johnson, the Buckeyes’ defensive line coach, had been encouraging Thompson to visit the campus for several years. Thompson, the former Neville defensive coordinator, first met Johnson when he began recruiting Rashard Lawrence, who signed with LSU in February. Although Thompson accepted his current job after Lawrence’s freshman year, he and Johnson kept in touch. During their trip, Thompson and Many were able to catch a couple of the Buckeyes’ spring practices and meet with members of the football and men’s basketball coaching and support staffs. “Mainly, we were able to visit with coach Johnson and the strength and conditioning staffs for football and men’s basketball, and see how they implement things,” Thompson said. “We watched the football team work out twice, and we got to see them scrimmage for about three hours Saturday. The scrimmage was closed to the public, but we had access.” While preparing for the trip, Thompson was surprised to discover that the Buckeyes’ head strength & conditioning coach for men’s basketball had ties to Calhoun. Though Thompson also grew up in Calhoun, he and David Richardson had never met. “I did not know David Richardson was from Calhoun until I did some research,” Thompson said. …
