Spring breakout player: Ohio State Buckeyes

2:55 PM ET Another spring season is winding to a close, and it’s time to look back to see who made the most of their 15 offseason practices. This week we will be going around the Big Ten to find the biggest breakout player on each roster. Ohio State is next on the list. It only took two workouts this spring for Ohio State coach Urban Meyer to start raving about the potential of receiver Austin Mack. AP Photo/Jay LaPreteSpring breakout player: WR Austin Mack Given all the candidates emerging just from one position, it hardly even seems fair to just pick one of the up-and-coming Buckeyes at wide receiver as the spring standout. But given Mack’s age and the fact that he should have been getting ready for prom this spring instead of competing for one of the vacant jobs catching passes from J.T. Barrett, the true freshman’s wildly impressive work over 15 practices in March and April earns him the nod over a handful of other worthy targets. In fact, it only took two workouts for Urban Meyer to start raving about Mack’s potential to make an impact and play a meaningful role in the expansion of the passing attack the Ohio State coaching staff has emphasized almost since the moment last season came to an end. “Austin Mack is going to play this year,” Meyer said shortly after camp opened. “I know it’s early to say that and I have a tendency to over-evaluate guys when I get excited about them, but he’s doing fantastic.” The praise didn’t slow down after that, either, with Mack quickly becoming the first player to have his black stripe removed from his helmet as part of Ohio State’s annual tradition symbolizing who has earned the right on the practice field to potentially represent the program in a game. That certainly doesn’t mean Mack is a finished product by any stretch of the imagination, and a few other wideouts did finish with better numbers in the spring game — most notably gifted athlete Torrance Gibson and the versatile Terry McLaurin…
