The shooting death of former Ohio State University football captain Willie “Chico” Nelson was “most likely a suicide,” Grove City Police Det. Sgt. Chris White said Wednesday. Nelson, who was staying with Grove City residents who knew him and went to church with him when he was in the area, left no note before, police think, he used a handgun to shoot himself in the chest. “There were some good-bye text messages on his phone to those closest to him,” White said. Those text messages, he added, were sent out immediately before Nelson’s death in the home on Kay Court. It also likely wasn’t Nelson’s first attempt Tuesday to take his life, White said. Police also found evidence that Nelson tried to use his car’s exhaust to kill himself. The garage of the home, White said, was sealed so exhaust fumes couldn’t escape. A woman who lives in the house returned home about 9 a.m. and questioned why Nelson had covered up the garage. “She saw him and he said something like ‘Just stop.’ Then he went inside the house, locked the door and she heard a shot,” White said…
