Ohio State’s Urban Meyer lifts ban on blue for one day

ANN ARBOR – Urban Meyer’s hatred of blue is well documented. The Ohio State coach, who has reprimanded students, reporters and NFL scouts for the color of their attire, is apparently softening his ban on the blue for one day. According to a report from The Columbus Dispatch, the Ohio State team will take part in “Patriot Week” this week leading up to Memorial Day. The Buckeyes will be educated on a variety of American topics during seminars, leading up to Friday’s Patriot Week finale. “That’s going to be what we call a Memorial Day workout,” Meyer told The Columbus Dispatch. “The players are going to be wearing red, white and blue, and we’ll have some fun with it. They’ll also take a test on what they’ve learned the previous four days, and before they leave on Friday for the holiday weekend, they’ve got to pass that test.” Apparently Meyer’s desire to educate his team and encourage American spirit trumps his ban on wearing blue. “We’ll make an exception that day,” Meyer said with a smile, according to The Columbus Dispatch. During Ohio State’s Student Appreciation Day practice in April, Meyer kicked out students wearing blue before telling them, “You don’t have to leave, but I don’t want to look at you.” Meyer has also made reporters and scouts wearing blue to Ohio State practice change their shirts and, while teaching his “Coaching Football” class, made students wearing blue do pushups. — Follow MLive’s Michigan coverage on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram— Subscribe to “The Wolverine Beat” podcast on iTunes
