Olympics | Gymnastics trials: Ohio State workout partners seek spot in Games

A couple of Ohio State Buckeyes — one current and one former — head to this week’s U.S. Olympic Trials from different directions, but the gymnasts have the same destination in mind. Brandon Wynn, 27, is an OSU graduate and national-team veteran who nearly earned a spot in the Olympics four years ago and knows his career clock is ticking on a life dream. Sean Melton, 21, just finished his sophomore season at OSU. He earned a spot to participate in the trials after attending the event as a fan in 2008 and ’12. As workout partners in Columbus, they are united in their desire to participate in August at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. >> Women’s gymnastics | Gabby Douglas among Olympic hopefuls with area ties “Any athlete wants to be on the biggest stage of his sport,” said Melton, the 2016 Big Ten gymnast of the year. “It doesn’t get bigger than the Olympic Games. I get chills thinking about it.” Melton and Wynn are among 18 competitors competing today and Saturday in St. Louis to make the five-man U.S. team. Results from this week’s trials will be combined with individual scores from the P&G Championships held three weeks ago. The top two finishers in the all-around will receive automatic places on the Olympic team, provided that they’re also among the top three in half of the six events.
